About a Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary
We are a family run non profit organisation registered with the BC Government that offers a forever home for rescued and abandoned farm animals in Duncan BC. Our sanctuary was founded in September 2017 and we are the second official farm sanctuary on Vancouver Island.
My name is Michelle Singleton and I established the sanctuary soon after I started volunteering at the RASTA Sanctuary in Chemainus. In June 2017, and after adopting 3 pot belly pigs, I took a tour of RASTA and it changed my life forever. This influenced me to follow a vegan lifestyle, after being a vegetarian for 6 years, and I started volunteering there every Saturday. In September the founder of RASTA, Lucie, asked me if I would be interested in taking in a large sow that was no longer needed for breeding in order to save the animal from being put down. Within several weeks I arranged to bring the new pig home and started a sanctuary for animals in need. I never would have guessed that an almost thousand pound pig would change the course of my life.
We currently have 35 residents at A Home for Hooves - eight pot belly pigs, two Guinea Hogs, 1 Yorkshire pig, 1 Berkshire pig, four goats, five chickens, ten ducks, two dogs and two cats. We ensure all our animals are provided the best care and a good quality home where they are able to live out their natural lives.
Our sanctuary is located on 4.5 acres and we are in the process of putting up fences and building shelters so we can rescue more animals in need. The biggest hurdle for us is the initial cost of setting up our property to ensure the animals have proper shelter and fences. We will take in more animals as space permits and will help with networking with other farm sanctuaries in order to place rescued and abandoned animals when we are at capacity.
We are also applying for our charity registration but it is a long drawn out process that can take one to two years to complete.
